Executive presence isn’t about the title
A few years ago, someone asked me a question after a workshop:
“How do I develop executive presence if I'm not an executive yet?”
It’s a fair question, and an incredibly common misconception. I was guilty of believing the same once upon a time.
Somewhere along the way, many professionals absorb the idea that executive presence is something you earn after you reach a certain title. Director. VP. C-suite.
But here’s the quiet truth: executive presence isn’t a promotion perk. It’s a professional habit that becomes more natural the earlier you practice it.
When people talk about executive presence, they often focus on the visible things: how someone speaks in meetings, how confidently they present ideas, how they carry themselves.
While those things matter, the real foundation is much simpler.
Executive presence is the ability to think beyond your task and speak to the bigger picture.
It shows up in moments like these:
- You connect your work to the team’s broader goals.
- You frame a problem and suggest a solution—not just flag the issue.
- You ask questions that move the conversation forward.
- You communicate clearly, without over-explaining or apologizing for your ideas.
Notice what’s happening here.
You’re not waiting for authority but demonstrating judgment. And the latter is what senior leaders actually look for.
One simple way habit to adopt is to add one sentence to your updates or contributions:
Instead of: “Here’s the analysis you asked for.”
Try: “Here’s the analysis. The key takeaway is X, which could help us address Y.”
One small shift that’s really a power move. It shows you’re thinking about what the work means, and your role in it.
And that’s what people associate with leadership: someone who understand the room. The big picture.
So ask yourself: Where in your work could you start speaking to the bigger picture?
Often, the difference between being seen as capable and being seen as a leader… is just a sentence or two.
Until next time…
