Clarity comes after movement, not before
Feeling stuck in your career rarely looks dramatic. In fact, it’s often so subtle that you don’t notice until a vague disquiet sets in.
I mean, you’re doing your job. Delivering. Showing up. But something feels… off. You can’t quite name the next step, and every option feels either too big, too risky, or not quite right. (Kind of like Goldilocks.)
So you wait for clarity, a sign.
You tell yourself, “Once I figure it out, then I’ll make a move.”
But here’s the reframe. Clarity doesn’t come from thinking harder but from moving sooner.
Most people treat their next move like a final decision. Something that has to be right, strategic, and fully formed before they act.
That pressure—the need for a perfect moment—is what keeps you stuck.
Instead, treat your next move like a test. Just a small, intentional experiment to get new information.
You don’t need a perfect plan right now. You need better data.
Try this exercise:
1️⃣ Shrink the question
Instead of “What should I do next?” ask “What am I curious about right now?”
Curiosity is easier to act on than pressure.
2️⃣ Run a low-risk experiment
Book a coffee chat. Volunteer for a different type of project. Take on a small task that stretches you.
Don’t announce it or overthink it. Just movement.
3️⃣ Pay attention to energy, not just outcomes
What felt engaging? What drained you? What made you think, “I want more of this” or “Definitely not that again”?
That’s your signal.
Here’s what you can expect.
You try something small, and it will lead to a conversation. That conversation results in a new idea. And suddenly, you’re exploring, and enjoying the process again.
Momentum creates clarity. Not the other way around.
So instead of waiting for a fully mapped-out next step, start where you are. See where it takes you.
Until next time…
